Big Data Institute Annual Data Science Challenge 2025
Event Overview: The Big Data Institute (BDI) invites participants to the Annual Data Science Challenge 2025 — a premier competition that brings together data enthusiasts, researchers, and industry experts to solve real-world data problems. This year’s theme focuses on leveraging big data for sustainable urban development. The challenge will test participants’ skills in data processing, predictive modeling, machine learning, and data visualization.
Key Dates:
- Registration Opens: January 15, 2025
- Registration Closes: March 15, 2025
- Competition Begins: March 25, 2025
- Submission Deadline: June 1, 2025
- Winners Announced: June 15, 2025
- Award Ceremony: June 20, 2025 (Virtual)
Competition Details:
Participants will be tasked with analyzing and processing a large dataset that contains real-world information related to city infrastructure, environmental data, population trends, and resource management. Using advanced analytical techniques and tools, the goal is to develop predictive models that help optimize urban development strategies for sustainability, energy efficiency, and climate resilience.
Tracks:
- Data Exploration & Cleansing:
- Clean and pre-process raw data, identify and handle missing values, and perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) to uncover hidden patterns.
- Predictive Modeling:
- Build machine learning models to predict key metrics such as population growth, energy consumption, or pollution levels.
- Data Visualization & Storytelling:
- Create compelling visualizations that effectively communicate findings and insights to a non-technical audience, while ensuring the story aligns with sustainable urban development.
- Hackathon Track (Optional):
- Teams can opt to compete in a 24-hour hackathon to develop an innovative prototype solution for an urban sustainability challenge using real-time data.
Prizes:
- 1st Place: $10,000 + Internship opportunity at BDI + Feature in BDI’s Annual Report
- 2nd Place: $5,000 + Mentorship session with industry experts
- 3rd Place: $2,500 + BDI certification in Data Science
- People’s Choice Award: $1,000 for the team with the best community-driven project
Eligibility:
- Open to individuals, teams of 2-5 participants, and university students worldwide.
- Participants must be 18 or older to enter.
- No prior experience in big data or data science is required, but familiarity with data analysis tools and programming languages (Python, R, SQL) is recommended.
Judging Criteria:
- Innovation: Originality of the approach and creativity in solving urban sustainability issues.
- Data Handling: Quality of data preprocessing and model selection.
- Predictive Accuracy: Performance of models on the provided test datasets.
- Visualization and Storytelling: Effectiveness and clarity of visualizations and how well the story communicates the insights.
- Scalability & Impact: Practicality and scalability of the proposed solution to real-world urban environments.
Registration & Participation:
- Sign Up: Register your team or as an individual on the official BDI website (www.bdi-contest2025.com).
- Access the Dataset: Upon registration, participants will receive access to the dataset along with guidelines and relevant resources.
- Submit Your Solution: Teams will submit their code, models, visualizations, and reports through the contest portal.
- Final Presentation: Shortlisted teams will be invited to present their findings virtually to a panel of judges from academia, government, and industry.
Sponsors & Partners:
- Platinum Sponsor: TechGiant Solutions
- Gold Sponsors: GreenTech Innovations, DataStream Inc.
- Community Partner: Urban Future Foundation
